Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about FoundryPDF's free, private PDF tools — from privacy and file limits to pricing and device support.
Are my files uploaded to a server?+
No. Every core tool (merge, split, rotate, delete pages, watermark, page numbers, compress, encrypt, JPG to PDF, PDF to JPG) runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your files never leave your device — there is no server to upload to.
What does 'private by construction' mean?+
It means the architecture itself prevents your data from leaving your device. Because the processing code runs in your browser's JavaScript engine, there is no network call that carries your file contents anywhere. You can verify this yourself by opening your browser's Network tab — you won't see any upload requests during processing.
Is there a file size limit?+
Each file can be up to 250 MB. For larger workloads, you can split the work into smaller batches. Because processing happens locally, the main constraint is your device's available memory.
Do I need to create an account?+
No. All ten core tools are free and work without any account. You only need an account if you want to purchase credits for the NanoPDF AI Editor.
Which browsers are supported?+
Any modern browser: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and most Chromium-based browsers on desktop and mobile. The tools work on iPhones, iPads, Android phones, Macs, Windows PCs, and Chromebooks.
Does it work on my phone?+
Yes. Every tool works in mobile Safari (iPhone/iPad) and Chrome for Android. Open the site, pick a tool, and use it just like on desktop — no app to install. See our PDF tools for iPhone hub for mobile-specific tips.
What is the NanoPDF AI Editor?+
The AI Editor is a premium feature that lets you upload a PDF, edit pages with AI assistance, add new slides, undo and redo versions, and download the finished document. It runs on a credit system — you buy a one-time credit pack and spend credits per edit. Failed edits are refunded automatically.
How much does it cost?+
All ten core PDF tools are completely free. The NanoPDF AI Editor uses one-time credit packs — no subscription required. A typical edit costs 2 credits, quick drafts cost 1, and ultra-sharp 4K output costs 4. See the pricing page for current pack prices.
What happens if an AI edit fails?+
Failed edits are refunded automatically — you only pay for results. If something goes wrong during processing, the credits are returned to your balance immediately.
Can I use FoundryPDF offline?+
You need an internet connection to load the website the first time. After that, the core tools process files locally in your browser. However, the site isn't currently packaged as a Progressive Web App for full offline use.
Is there a watermark on the output?+
No. Free tools produce clean output with no watermark, no branding, and no limitations on the result. What you see is what you download.
How is this different from other online PDF tools?+
Most 'online' PDF tools upload your file to a server for processing. FoundryPDF runs the processing code directly in your browser, so your files never leave your device. There's no server-side processing pipeline, no upload queue, and no stored copies of your documents.
